The definitive story of the British in Kenya, from the explorer Joseph Thomson, whose exploits inspired King Solomon’s Mines, to the decadent Happy Valley set of the 1930s, the murder of Lord Erroll, and the Mau Mau revolt of the 1950s. "Nicholas Best tells an immensely entertaining tale" - Max Hastings, Evening Standard "Erudite, amusing and, even, gossipy" - Nigel Dempster, Punch "First class... quite hilariously funny!'" - Melbourne Herald "Anyone with experience of Kenya, past or present, resident or tourist, will enjoy reading Happy Valley" - Country Life

I was actually quite pleased with this rendition of the lives of the folks that lived in the "White Highlands" . I thought it was quite well balanced and jibed fairly accurately with the other memoirs I have read. This one got a bit more at WWII than others and I appreciate that as well. As I know people who were very familiar with the "White Highlanders" and were part of the real "farmer" group, they did not participate in the antiques of the smaller number of rich and indolent, but they remember them quite well. Or they remember their parents' stories. All interesting.

The book is a history of Kenya and the people living there. One thing not mentioned is after independence the big game animals were horribly poached. Hunting was not legal so the animals had no value.
As I have traveled to this part of Africa a number of years ago I found this book a treasure of information regarding the European settlement of the area. There is not much remaining in Kenya or Tansania that shows they were ever there although we did visit the Karin Blixen home which has been preserved. Our tour was mostly in the bush but included Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar and Nagoragora crater all mentioned in this book. Back in the early 60's I read a book by Robert Rourk "Something of Value" regarding the Mau Mau uprising which was very grafic but also an explanation of what happened to the European settlement in Kenya so I found this history a further addition to my knowledge of that desperate time. Although this book was a little hard to follow at times as it included such a variety of characters I thought it was quite well written and extremely fascinating. I do recommend it.
This book is easy to read and enjoy. It has a tremendous amount of historical/geographical/anthropological tidbits, interspersed with amusing and appalling stories. I have never been to Kenya and don't know much about it, so I found myself repeatedly googling things mentioned in the book to learn more. Really an excellent light read!
Delightful book. Especially if you have interest in this area. It reads as good as historical fiction - - -EXCEPT is not fiction - - real people doing real things. It can be heart rendering at times and quite jolly at other times. That's life I guess. I read it as preparation for a trip to Kenya this fall.
A very thoughtful and fair presentation of the late colonial phase of Kenya's storied history. Having visited the country ourselves to see how the business of our son and his partner and co-founder were doing, this book brought back some fond memories of Karen, the Mt. Kenya Safari Club and other places mentioned. Recommended to all!
My father was one of the italian prisoners of war in a camp near thik, and worked as an engineer with E.A.P.&L. I and mother went with him from italy in1948,and i attended the Hill School,Eldoret 1948 to 1952 with many Africaners, then the Duke of york.We lived near Thika during the mau mau,and went to the cinema in Thika with all our guns as they had to be unavailable in the house. Loss of a gun was prison. This book has stirred many memories and i recalled visits fro the Black Watch, after their Korea war stint, also the Inniskilling Fuseliers. A very well written book with humour and i feel very accurate. Well done and a credit to the coutry.
This book may be a bit "gossipy" as other reviewers comment, but it is a thoroughly good read. What is most refreshing is the fact that is not cloaked in the latest fashion of political correctness at all cost. It is a gutsy book that I found objective, unbiased and at times almost brutally honest. I learned a lot of Kenya history that I had not known. Certainly some parts are amusingly written, while others stirred up feelings of sadness, nostalgia and loss. Perhaps the title is aimed at better book sales rather than at describing the true content of the book, which is about far more than the "Happy Valley Set" . For anyone interested in Kenya history from the time of the early Pioneers to Independence, I thoroughly recommend this book.
